Komatsu Düsseldorf is reaping the benefits of new engineering concept

With a 30% share of the global market, Düsseldorf-based company Komatsu Mining Germany GmbH (KMG) is a leading manufacturer of large hydraulic excavators. These machines have become increasingly complex over time. Whereas electrical diagrams once consisted of around 37 pages, today they're a whole 500 pages long! In order to keep track of everything, KMG decided to start using Engineering Base Cable within the company.

"Engineering Base allows our broad spectrum of variants to be handled very easily and with total consistency. I see the database-focused approach, in particular, and the resulting continuity as outstanding features of the software."

Standardize while staying flexible

What makes special-purpose vehicles so challenging is that there is no definitive workflow for developing the electrical distribution system. There are so many differences in the products and processes that the approaches used also differ everywhere. The aim is therefore to provide optimum support for the existing workflows. Our data-centric engineering software adapts to the system: from the initial concept to harness design and manufacture to the provision of information, Engineering Base brings together all disciplines in a centralized model.

When developing wiring harnesses, the electrical and mechanical specialists are both dependent on each other's data. Information needs to be exchanged on a regular basis. This is where the 3D link-up for Engineering Base Cable comes into play, as it integrates mechanical information directly into the digital electrical harness model. This greatly simplifies collaboration between mechanical and electrical development by allowing both disciplines to work in parallel and retrieve information in a consistently up-to-date, synchronized form, accelerating the planning process significantly. But Engineering Base is capable of more than just linking to 3D systems – it also provides interfaces to numerous complementary systems, such as ERP or PLM.

"Engineering Base Cable simplifies collaboration between the various disciplines involved in the development of electrical systems, wiring harnesses, hydraulics and pneumatics."
